This is a screen shot from a scene in the film SISTER

This fall semester I was asked to help out on the crew of an independent film that a few of my friends were planning on shooting over the last two weeks of our University’s Christmas break. The film would be shot in the sunshine state of Florida so, of course, I couldn’t resist the opportunity. Also, I was asked to work in the camera department and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite positions on a film set, so that part didn’t hurt either. So, the day after Christmas I began the long journey to the Orlando area from North Eastern Ohio -talk about a journey! I met up with some friends in Kentucky and the four of us drove the rest of the journey together; a total of 18 hours in the car for me if you count my trip from Ohio. But it was a small price to pay for all the fun times we had on the car ride and all the fun times to be had during filming.

Our first day was the definitely the longest. We had a call time of 5:45 AM and got our first shot around 7 AM. We had planned to shoot about 7 pages of the script that day! If you don’t speak film, that means we had about a 12 hour day. That’s a lot, but we did it because our crew works very well together. That night we got back around 10:30 PM and were all eager to get showers and get to bed. The next morning we had a 7:30 AM call time, which was a nice change compared to the previous morning! The Florida sun was blazing hot, but we pushed through the day and got all 5 pages we had planned to shoot out of the way. It’s quite amazing what a crew can pull off when everyone believes in the project and brings their “A game” to set every day. Let’s hope I keep that up through day 3; it’s a night shoot. Wish me luck! In the meantime, check out the film’s website in the link below!
